Namgu in Gwangju is set to develop Sajik-dong Acoustic Guitar Street, known as the mecca of Korean folk music, into a local alley commercial district that appeals to both Generation X and the MZ Generation.

According to Namgu on May 9, Sajik-dong Acoustic Guitar Street was recently selected as a project target area in Gwangju City's regional specialized preliminary excellent commercial district discovery and development contest. The district will invest 80 million won in project funds, including city and district budgets, by the end of this year to create a successful alley commercial district model centered on music.

This project aims to revitalize the alley commercial district and promote a sense of community among all local residents by forming a joint consultative body made up of Acoustic Guitar Street merchants and nearby residents. The goal is to encourage mutual growth between Generation X and MZ Generation musicians.

The Sajik-dong Acoustic Guitar Street specialized commercial district development project is expected to create synergy for local tourism by aligning with the ongoing construction of the Time Post Office, which is set to open by the end of this year, and the Salon de Sajik project, which features a variety of storytelling events in the area.

Namgu plans to establish an outdoor busking stage on Acoustic Guitar Street for collaborative performances between Generation X and the MZ Generation, and to host regular busking events on both weekdays and weekends.

The district also intends to allow all music lovers, including singers affiliated with the Acoustic Guitar Street Music Association, acoustic guitar groups, and amateur clubs, to perform on stage.

Additionally, Namgu will attract young entrepreneurs by supporting two currently vacant stores as youth shops, providing 50% of the annual rent. The district will also recruit university student supporters for Sajik-dong Acoustic Guitar Street to deliver diverse content to both Gwangju residents and visitors through SNS and online communities.

Furthermore, a consultative body involving local residents will be formed to implement specialized projects such as lowering menu prices on Acoustic Guitar Street and attracting more customers. The district also plans to improve nighttime landscape lighting, launch digital marketing initiatives for Acoustic Guitar Street, and operate a stamp tour app.

A district official stated, "We will accelerate efforts to boost sales in the Acoustic Guitar Street commercial district and foster an alley commercial district where both established and emerging musicians can thrive, so that the Sajik-dong area can become a leading tourist destination in the region."
