On May 8, the Namdong Police Station in Incheon announced that they had booked a 24-year-old man, referred to as A, on charges of causing death or injury under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents and for driving without a license under the Road Traffic Act. At around 4:26 a.m. that day, A was driving a Mercedes-Benz passenger car on a road in Guwol-dong, Namdong-gu, Incheon, when he collided head-on with an oncoming SUV. The crash killed two people: the SUV driver, a woman in her sixties identified as B, and a man in his twenties identified as C, who was a passenger in the Mercedes-Benz.
It was determined that B, the victim, was on her way to a military base early in the morning to pick up her son, who was on leave, when the accident occurred. She was alone in the vehicle at the time.
It is reported that there were a total of five people in the Mercedes-Benz driven by A, including four men and women in their twenties. A and three other passengers, both male and female, were also injured in the accident and were transported to the hospital by 119 paramedics. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
At the time of the accident, A was driving the Mercedes-Benz under the influence of alcohol. He crossed the center line on an eight-lane road and drove against traffic, resulting in a collision with the SUV. It was found that A had previously been caught driving under the influence and had his license suspended, but he drank again and drove without a license.
During the police investigation, A admitted to the drunk driving charge, stating, "I drove after drinking." A police official said, "A borrowed a friend's car to drive. The passengers in A's car are believed to be acquaintances of different ages. We are considering whether to charge the passengers with aiding and abetting drunk driving."
The police conducted a blood test on A and requested a detailed analysis from the National Forensic Service. If his blood alcohol level is confirmed, the police plan to additionally charge him with causing death or injury by dangerous driving under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes and with drunk driving under the Road Traffic Act, and will also seek an arrest warrant.
