Housing Allowance Support
Applications Accepted Until June 5
Gurye County in South Jeolla Province announced on May 8 that it will be accepting applications for the first half of the year for the "Hometown Nest" program until June 5.
The Hometown Nest program aims to alleviate the financial burden of housing for college students (including those on a leave of absence) who are studying in other regions by providing a monthly housing allowance of 50,000 won. Students are eligible if their registered address remains in Gurye County.
To qualify, applicants must have maintained their resident registration in Gurye County continuously for at least one year as of the eligibility date, and must currently be enrolled in or on a leave of absence from a university located outside of the county. Applications can be submitted in person at the relevant town or township office corresponding to the applicant's registered address by June 5.
The county plans to review the applications and provide the first half-year's allowance (six months for continuing students, four months for freshmen) by the end of June. Last year (2024), a total of 159.6 million won in support funds was distributed to 530 college students.
Kim Soonho, the county governor, stated, "We hope that the Hometown Nest program will help ease the housing burden for our students studying in other regions," and added, "We will continue to do our best to develop policies for young people who will lead the future of Gurye."
Meanwhile, Gurye County is implementing various population policies to address the risk of population decline, including providing volume-based waste bags to new residents, offering marriage congratulatory payments to young couples, and supporting childbirth and pregnancy.
