Trilateral Phone Consultation Condemns North Korea's Ballistic Missile Launch

North Korea Fires Multiple Ballistic Missiles into the East Sea on the Morning of May 8

On May 8, North Korea launched several short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea, prompting South Korea, the United States, and Japan to hold a telephone consultation and strongly condemn the action.


According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the three countries held a deputy chief-level phone consultation on the same morning, sharing assessments regarding North Korea's ballistic missile launches and discussing possible measures for cooperation. Previously, the Joint Chiefs of Staff announced that North Korea had fired several short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea between approximately 8:10 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. on this day.

During the consultation, the three countries condemned North Korea's ballistic missile launches as a violation of multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions, and as a serious threat to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the international community.


The three countries also agreed to closely monitor the possibility of further provocations by North Korea. In addition, they decided to continue close cooperation in order to respond firmly to North Korea's provocations and threats, based on the strong South Korea-U.S. alliance and trilateral security cooperation among South Korea, the United States, and Japan.
