On May 8, Mgen Solution announced that it had received a notification of patent registration from the Korean Intellectual Property Office for its AI-based fire detection and suppression system.
This patent covers a system that analyzes footage collected from closed-circuit (CC) TV using AI to detect the 'first spark' and, at the same time, precisely target the location of the fire to activate an automatic suppression device.
According to the company, while fire detection and warning systems using AI video analysis have existed previously, this is the first time a system has been developed that can accurately identify the fire location and link it with an automatic suppression device for fire response.
Amid growing risks of large-scale wildfires due to recent climate change, there have been calls to comprehensively overhaul the wildfire response system. According to a report by the National Assembly Research Service, wildfires have become larger and the extent of the damage has increased since the 2020s. In fact, compared to the 2010s, the area affected by wildfires in the 2020s increased by 7.8 times, and the number of large wildfires exceeding 1 million square meters rose by 3.7 times.
Lee Taekki, head of the research center at Mgen Solution, stated, "While automatic suppression systems using traditional flame detection sensors can be operated indoors, they are prone to malfunctions in outdoor environments, making their application difficult."
He added, "The technology we have developed and patented this time can accurately detect fire locations outdoors and share this information with automatic suppression devices," emphasizing, "It is particularly effective for initial fire response in outdoor situations such as wildfires."
Mgen Solution is focusing on developing various next-generation firefighting devices, including firefighting robots and multi-drone-based wildfire disaster response systems. The company is working to establish an integrated firefighting solution that covers the entire process from fire detection to initial response, real-time monitoring, and spread prevention, and is continuously expanding its product portfolio.
