This year, the event will be held for the longest period and on the largest scale ever. The number of gardens will increase from 90 last year to 111 this year, with a wider range of participants. In particular, the number of gardens created by companies and institutions, which focused on public-private cooperation and mutual growth from the planning stage, will expand from 21 last year to 33 this year. In addition, gardens will be created with the participation of other local governments and all 25 autonomous districts of Seoul.
The "2024 Seoul International Garden Expo," held last year at Ttukseom Hangang Park, featured a total of 90 gardens and attracted 7.8 million visitors over five months. Within just five days of opening, 1.02 million people visited, and by the 100th day, the cumulative number of visitors surpassed 5 million, establishing itself as Seoul's leading "million-seller" festival for the garden city.
This year marks the 10th edition of the "Seoul Garden Expo," which began in 2015, and the event will be held on the largest site and for the longest duration in its history, with unprecedented scale and content. The theme is "Seoul, Green Soul." The goal is to turn the entire city of Seoul into a living, breathing garden, focusing on respect and love for nature rooted in the city's history, culture, and the lives of its citizens.
A variety of complex cultural and leisure spaces will also be created, including the "Garden Market (Garden Industry Fair)," which will feature large-scale participation from garden and leisure brands, as well as garden culture programs tailored to different themes and audiences. The event will span various fields such as culture, arts, tourism, and welfare.
The 111 gardens will include: ▲ Designer Gardens ▲ "Companion Gardens" created by students, citizens, multicultural families, and autonomous districts ▲ "Art Gardens" created by companies, institutions, and local governments ▲ "Attraction Gardens" that tell the stories of Seoul. The Garden Market (Garden Industry Fair) will also be held in a special format. The scope will expand beyond the garden industry to include outdoor, living art, and design, with participation from more than 70 companies. "Garden Industry Fair PLUS+" will showcase new technologies and products in various fields, while the "Garden Center" will exhibit and sell various garden supplies and plants. There will also be a "Garden Furniture Special Exhibition," an outdoor display using garden facilities.
In addition, a variety of international academic events will provide in-depth discussions and professional insights on gardens, such as the "11th BGCI International Congress on Education in Botanic Gardens (ICEBG) Workshop" (June 12, COEX) and the "Garden City Seoul International Symposium" (October 17, Seoul City Hall Multipurpose Hall). Lee Suyeon, Director of the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Garden City Bureau, stated, "While last year's expo brought about significant hardware changes by creating large-scale civic gardens, this year our goal is to expand garden infrastructure and explore new possibilities for gardens through various initiatives, ultimately creating a Seoul filled with 'Green Soul' through interaction between citizens and gardens."
