The Friends Volunteer Group under POSCO Gwangyang Steelworks (headed by Ko Jae-yoon) carried out a volunteer activity on May 6, in celebration of Family Month, to improve the living environment of the household of a national merit recipient suffering from dementia.
The Friends Volunteer Group at Gwangyang Steelworks is a volunteer organization that is leading positive change in the local community through activities such as dementia prevention programs for local seniors, improving the living conditions of elderly people living alone, harvesting agricultural products at aging farms, and purchasing local agricultural and marine products.

This volunteer activity was planned to express gratitude to national merit recipients who devoted themselves to the country in the past and to provide practical assistance to their lives. Since mid-April, the group has been conducting activities to improve their living environment.
Since the senior national merit recipient is 91 years old and experiencing discomfort due to dementia, the volunteer work was carried out with the utmost priority placed on the senior’s safety and convenience.
In addition to activities to prevent safety accidents in daily life, such as removing hazardous facilities in the home, the volunteers repainted the interior walls, doors, and window frames to create a brighter atmosphere, and carried out wallpapering work to help the senior live in a more comfortable and pleasant environment.
In particular, because wallpapering is not a task that anyone can easily perform, it was especially meaningful that the Wallpaper Volunteer Group, which has specialized in wallpapering volunteer work for more than 300 households since 2014, participated in improving the living conditions for the senior on this day.
Choi Chang-rok, head of the Friends Volunteer Group at Gwangyang Steelworks, said, "We started this volunteer activity to offer even a small contribution to the noble cause of national merit recipients who did not hesitate to sacrifice for the country," and added, "With sincere wishes for the health of those who made today’s Republic of Korea possible, we will continue to carry out this volunteer work in the future."
Meanwhile, the Friends Volunteer Group at Gwangyang Steelworks plans to complete this living environment improvement project by the end of this month.
