On May 7, Gwangju City held the "Gwangju Area Trunk Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System Development Plan Establishment Project Kickoff Meeting" in the small conference room of City Hall, officially launching the project.

The BRT, which is part of the city's "Public Transit, Bicycle, and Pedestrian (Dae-Ja-Bo) City Development Project," aims to introduce a new public transportation system along the north-south axis of Gwangju, offering speed and punctuality. Through this initiative, the city plans to alleviate traffic congestion, establish an eco-friendly transportation system, and accelerate the transition to a carbon-neutral city.

Through this project, the city intends not only to establish a development plan for the "Baegun-Maegok BRT" route, which connects Baegun Square (formerly Daedong High School), Nongseong Station, Gwangcheon Intersection, Gyeongsin Girls' High School, and Gwangju Technical High School (8.67 km) as reflected in the "First Comprehensive BRT Plan Revision (2021-2030)," but also to identify new routes. The city is targeting completion of basic and detailed design in 2026, with the goal of opening the route in 2027.

Kim Jongho, head of the Metropolitan Transportation Division, stated, "As this project introduces a new public transportation system that will usher in the Dae-Ja-Bo era and significantly improve the lives of citizens, we request the continued and active advice and cooperation of relevant organizations and experts."
