Jeonnam Province announced on May 7 that it has been selected for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's 'Future Mobility Collision Safety Infrastructure Advancement' public contest project, signaling a green light for Jeonnam to become a hub of the future automotive industry through the advancement of its e-mobility collision safety testing facility.

Jeonnam Province plans to invest a total of 10 billion won by 2029 to significantly expand its advanced equipment, including crash test dummies, moving trolleys, and side impact video analysis devices. This expansion will increase the number of collision test categories from the current 10 to 33, enabling not only domestic but also North American and European certification tests to be conducted.

The e-mobility collision safety testing facility, established in 2020, is the first in Korea dedicated to small electric vehicles. It conducts safety component evaluations, regulatory certification tests, and vehicle development tests for passenger cars, trucks, and electric vehicles under 3.5 tons.

With enhanced testing expertise and reliability, the facility was designated in April 2024 as the crash safety performance evaluation center for Hyundai Motor and Kia, and now conducts crash safety tests for newly developed vehicles, further strengthening its status as a key domestic crash safety support facility.

Once this advancement project is completed, collision safety tests that previously relied on overseas testing centers due to a lack of domestic infrastructure will become possible in Jeonnam. This is expected to attract automotive parts companies and related research institutes, expanding related industries and revitalizing the regional economy.

Going forward, Jeonnam Province plans to link the 'e-mobility collision safety testing facility' with the nation's largest 'Future Vehicle Electromagnetic Compatibility Certification and Evaluation Center' to support technical verification and global certification across the entire future mobility industry, from collision testing to electromagnetic compatibility testing.

In addition, by utilizing the e-mobility industry infrastructure built over the past decade, such as the 'e-mobility parts pilot production support center,' Jeonnam Province will strengthen customized R&D, parts production, and testing and certification support systems, accelerating the shift from a domestic market-focused structure to an export-oriented industry.

Soh Youngho, Director of Strategic Industries at Jeonnam Province, stated, "With our selection for this public contest project, Jeonnam has laid the foundation to become the center for future automotive certification testing," adding, "We will establish a certification support system with global-level safety and reliability to actively support Jeonnam-based companies in entering overseas markets."
