Dankook University Hospital Team Wins Best Paper Award at Korean Society of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Conference

Proving the Effectiveness of REBOA Treatment Through Multicenter Collaborative Research

Dankook University Hospital announced on May 7 that the Chungnam Regional Trauma Center team led by Professor Kim Donghun (with Professor Heo Yoonjung as the first author and Professor Jang Sungwook as a co-researcher) was selected for the Best Paper Award at the 28th International Conference of the Korean Society of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care.

The conference was held last month at BEXCO in Busan, attended by leading scholars in the field of trauma and surgical critical care from the United States, Europe, and other countries.

Professor Kim's team presented a multicenter collaborative study on the latest treatment outcomes of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) in domestic cases of traumatic thoracoabdominal hemorrhage.

REBOA is a technique first introduced to Korea in 2016 by Jang Sungwook, the director of the Chungnam Regional Trauma Center. The research team demonstrated that, over the past five years since the introduction of REBOA, the survival rate of severe trauma patients nationwide has continuously improved.

In particular, in addition to Dankook University Hospital, four other regional trauma centers participated in the study: Gachon University Gil Medical Center, Ajou University Hospital, Wonju Severance Christian Hospital, and Jeju Halla Hospital.

Professor Kim Donghun stated, "This award is the result of every team member working together with a single purpose to help severe trauma patients, even in challenging circumstances. Our goal is to introduce a hybrid emergency treatment system in the future, so that, along with REBOA treatment, we can save the lives of countless patients."
