Kim Moonsoo's Camp Files Injunction to Halt People Power Party National Committee and Convention

"Unification Talks Should Be Left
to Negotiations and Judgment Between the Candidates"

On May 7, eight out-of-office district committee chairmen supporting Kim Moonsoo, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, announced that they had filed an injunction petition with the court to halt the party's national committee meeting and party convention.

The eight out-of-office district committee chairmen of the People Power Party, including Kim Minseo, Kim Bokdeok, and Kim Heetaek, issued this statement at the campaign office of candidate Kim Moonsoo located in Yeouido, Seoul, on the same day.

The party leadership has announced plans to convene the national committee meeting on May 8-9 and the party convention on May 10-11. In response, candidate Kim strongly objected, stating, "The leadership is trying to forcibly remove a legitimate presidential candidate." This has been interpreted as an attempt to replace the elected presidential candidate by amending the party's constitution and regulations. On the other hand, the party explained that they are preparing necessary measures in case the candidate is replaced with former Prime Minister Han Ducksoo as a result of unification negotiations or other circumstances.

On this day, the eight district committee chairmen pointed out, "Recently, the leadership of the People Power Party has been unreasonably convening the national committee and party convention, undermining the democratic legitimacy of candidate Kim Moonsoo and even threatening his candidacy," adding, "This is a serious violation of the party's principles and procedures for democratic operation and can never be tolerated."

They continued, "We strongly condemn these actions by the party leadership and demand their immediate suspension," and urged, "The decision on candidate unification should be left entirely to the autonomous negotiations and judgment between candidate Kim and candidate Han."

The eight district committee chairmen expect that the court's decision could be made as early as May 8-9. They added, "Since we had to prepare the injunction petition urgently, there are people who could not participate, but we are gathering opinions from committee members and lawmakers."
