On May 7, Jeonnam Province announced that it would extend the application period for the 2025 Basic Public Direct Payment by one month, until the 30th of this month. This extension follows the revision of the Public Direct Payment Act, which newly includes river farmland and farmland acquired for public interest projects?previously excluded from eligibility?as payment recipients.
Direct payments for farmland within river zones can be received if the farmer obtains a river use permit and cultivates eco-certified agricultural products. However, the eco-certification must be maintained until the end of September, when the payment is finalized.
Additionally, farmland that has received approval, notification, or consultation for conversion to non-agricultural use?such as for industrial complexes, residential, commercial, or industrial areas?due to public interest projects, may be eligible for direct payments if it has not received compensation as of the previous year and is recognized as having been used for agriculture for more than one year.
In response, Jeonnam Province has extended the application and registration period for public direct payments by one month to allow more farmers to benefit. As of April 21, a total of 198,000 applications for public direct payments had been received, which is about 90% of last year's figure of 219,000 applications.
Yoo Deokgyu, head of the Crop and Horticulture Division at Jeonnam Province, stated, "With the application period extended from the end of April to May, we plan to encourage 100% of eligible farmers to apply within the deadline."
