Goheung County and Seoul Geumcheon District Youth Foster Friendship Through Cultural Exchange

Hands-on Experiences Bridging Tradition and Science
A Platform for Communication and Exchange

Goheung County in South Jeolla Province (Governor Gong Youngmin) announced on May 7 that it had invited 20 students from Geumcheon District, Seoul, its sister city, for a one-night, two-day exchange program held from May 2 to 3. Together with 20 students from Goheung County, they participated in various exchange activities at the Goheung Aerospace Festival venue and the Goheung Buncheong Culture Museum.

The two regions have maintained ongoing exchanges since establishing their sister city relationship in 2005. This event, designed to promote cultural understanding between local governments and foster interaction among young people, brought together a total of 40 students from grades 4 to 6 in elementary schools from both regions.

On the first day, the participating students engaged in community programs at the Goheung Buncheong Culture Museum, including a pottery-making experience to learn about Goheung's traditional culture, exhibition tours, and recreational activities, allowing them to get to know one another. On the second day, they broadened their understanding and interest in advanced science through a tour of the Naro Space Center launch site and hands-on experiences at the Goheung Aerospace Festival.

One student who took part in the exchange said, "At first, it was a bit awkward, but as we did activities together, we quickly became friends," adding, "Although the program was short, it was a meaningful time to understand each other's cultures and become friends."

A county official stated, "This youth cultural exchange was a very meaningful opportunity for the next generation to directly experience and continue the spirit of cooperation between sister cities," and added, "We will continue to actively support various exchange programs so that young people can understand and grow together."

Meanwhile, as part of ongoing exchanges between the two regions, Goheung County youth are scheduled to visit Geumcheon District during the Geumcheon Science Festival in September.
