Seo-gu in Gwangju Develops 'On Reuse' App for Garbage Truck Arrival Information

Pilot Operation Begins This Month
Anticipated to Improve Daily Convenience and Create a Cleaner Environment

Seo-gu in Gwangju has developed a mobile app called 'On Reuse' that predicts and notifies users of garbage truck arrival times, and began pilot operations of the app this month.

According to Seo-gu on May 7, 'On Reuse' is a system that attaches GPS devices to garbage trucks, analyzes collection history, and provides real-time estimated arrival times for different types of waste?such as general waste (volume-based), food waste, and recyclables?via a smartphone app.

Seo-gu plans to enhance the system during the pilot phase and officially launch the full service in the second half of this year.

In Seo-gu, the designated time for disposing of household waste is from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. the following day on weekdays. However, residents who find it difficult to dispose of waste during these hours can use the 'On Reuse' app to check the estimated arrival time of the garbage truck at their location and dispose of their waste at a more convenient time.

In addition to garbage truck arrival information, the app also provides the locations and operating hours of resource circulation stores, instructions on how to use accumulated points, and more. Residents can collect items such as PET bottles, cans, paper packs, used batteries, and ice packs, bring them to resource circulation stores, and earn points that can be used like cash.

Seo-gu expects that the introduction of this system will help reduce the problem of waste being left unattended in residential areas and on side streets, and will contribute to creating a cleaner and more pleasant living environment by preventing odors and the occurrence of pests.

The 'On Reuse' app can be downloaded and used on smartphones. For more details, residents can contact the Seo-gu Facilities Management Corporation.

Hwang Bongju, President of the Seo-gu Facilities Management Corporation, stated, "Voluntary participation from residents is crucial to ensure the stable establishment of the collection system," adding, "Although there may be some discrepancies due to weather or traffic conditions, we will do our best to prevent any inconvenience caused by uncollected waste."
