To Be Held at the National Library of Korea on May 12-13
Seeking International Cooperation on Open Metadata
The National Library of Korea, under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, announced on May 7 that it will host an international academic seminar titled "Open Metadata: Libraries and Open Science" in celebration of its 80th anniversary. The event will be held at the International Conference Hall of the National Library of Korea from May 12 to 13.
The main purpose of this seminar is to highlight the importance of Open Metadata as the national representative library and to discuss ways to foster cooperation among libraries and research institutions worldwide. In particular, the seminar will focus on exploring future development strategies for library services in response to the expanding openness and sharing of knowledge resources, such as research data, in a rapidly changing information environment.
The keynote speeches on the first day will address major issues related to open metadata and libraries. Domestically, Professor Oh Samgyun of Sungkyunkwan University will deliver a lecture on "Strategies for Coexistence with Human-Centered AI." Internationally, Wolfram Horstmann, CEO of FIZ Karlsruhe Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure, will speak on "Open Knowledge Infrastructure."
The thematic presentation sessions will cover topics such as "Open Science and Library Services," "Cases of Building and Operating Open Metadata," and "Future Development Strategies." In each session, two to three library and data experts will deliver presentations and engage in discussions. During the comprehensive discussion, participants will engage in in-depth dialogue on future development tasks and international cooperation strategies based on the topics discussed throughout the seminar.
Kim Heesup, Director of the National Library of Korea, stated, "This international academic seminar will serve as an opportunity to reflect on the National Library of Korea's role in preserving and disseminating knowledge resources as the national representative library, and to consider the direction libraries should take as core institutions of the national knowledge infrastructure." He added, "The National Library of Korea will continue to systematically build and open national knowledge information and expand international cooperation."
Participation in this event is available through online registration on the National Library of Korea's website, and on-site registration will also be possible.
