On May 7, it was announced that the Galaxy S25 will receive the '2025 ReMA Recycling Design Award' from the Recycling Materials Association (ReMA) of North America. Samsung Electronics received high marks for its efforts to expand the use of recycled materials and minimize resource consumption.
Samsung Electronics, in collaboration with its partners, has established a 'battery recycling circulation system' that recovers key materials such as cobalt from discarded Galaxy smartphone batteries for reuse, and applied this system to the Galaxy S25. The Galaxy S25 also utilizes eight types of recycled materials, including aluminum, rare earth elements, and iron. For the first time in the Galaxy series, all exterior components of the Galaxy S25 feature recycled materials, with recycled armor aluminum used for the side frame. The product packaging box is also made entirely from 100% recycled paper. In addition, Samsung Electronics is working to extend product lifespans and reduce electronic waste through its 'Self-Repair Program,' which enables consumers to repair products themselves.
The Recycling Design Award is presented to products that receive the highest scores for sustainability, based on a comprehensive evaluation of recycled material usage, minimization of environmental impact during production, recyclability, and economic viability of recycling. The award ceremony will take place at the ReMA Convention in San Diego, California, United States, on May 14 (local time).
Samsung Electronics is pursuing a goal to convert all overseas business sites and all DX division operations to 100% renewable energy by 2027. The company also aims to apply at least one type of recycled material to every module of its mobile products by 2030.
Daniel Araujo, Executive Vice President of the Sustainability Management Office at Samsung Electronics MX Division, stated, "Samsung Electronics has been striving to incorporate sustainable elements at every stage of product development," adding, "With the Galaxy S25, we will continue our efforts to realize a circular economy and create a sustainable environment for the next generation, based on advanced technological innovation and a sense of responsibility for the environment."
Robin Wiener, President of the Recycling Materials Association of North America, said, "Samsung Electronics has incorporated sustainability principles throughout the design, use, and disposal processes of the Galaxy S25," and added, "The use of a variety of recycled materials demonstrates a passion for innovative and environmentally responsible product design."
