Samsung SDI Wins "Innovation Award" at Europe's Largest Energy Exhibition... Only Korean Company Honored

Winner of "The Smarter E Award 2025"

Samsung SDI was the only domestic battery manufacturer to receive the Innovation Award at "The Smarter E Europe 2025," the largest energy exhibition in Europe, which opened in Munich, Germany.

On May 7, Samsung SDI announced that its new high-power uninterruptible power supply (UPS) product, the "U8A1," and its thermal propagation prevention safety technology (No TP) had both received "The Smarter E Award 2025."

"The Smarter E Award" is presented annually ahead of the exhibition, with a panel of industry experts selecting the best innovative products and technologies across five categories: energy storage, e-mobility, photovoltaics, smart energy, and outstanding projects.

This year, a total of 14 products and technologies were selected. Among the domestic companies participating in "The Smarter E Europe 2025," Samsung SDI was the only one to be named as an award winner.

The U8A1, which won in the "Energy Storage" category, is a new high-power UPS battery product independently developed by Samsung SDI. It supplies power to facilities such as data centers in the event of unexpected situations like blackouts, and it also features a function to stabilize power quality during sudden surges in power demand.

Compared to previous products, the U8A1 offers more than 40% higher output per battery rack, resulting in improved space efficiency. Because fewer units are needed to meet the high power demands of AI data centers and similar facilities, the UPS installation area can be reduced by approximately 33% compared to before. Its long lifespan allows UPS users to lower operating costs, which is attracting attention from global IT companies amid the recent growth of the AI market.

The No TP technology received an award in the "E-Mobility" category. This technology prevents thermal propagation to adjacent cells through Samsung SDI's unique safety design, even if a problem occurs in a specific battery cell.

From the product planning stage, Samsung SDI uses its proprietary thermal propagation performance prediction program to design the optimal structure for preventing thermal propagation. Based on prediction data, the most suitable safety materials are applied between cells, and gas can be released along a designated path through a gas vent.

A Samsung SDI representative stated, "It is highly meaningful to have our battery technology recognized at Europe's leading energy industry exhibition. We will continue to target the global market, including Europe, based on our innovative technologies."
