Jeonnam Province has announced that, in response to a recent carbon monoxide leak incident at a resort in Wando County, it will conduct a large-scale safety inspection of tourist accommodation facilities throughout the province. This initiative, carried out in cooperation with the Fire Headquarters, Korea Gas Safety Corporation, and municipal and county governments, aims to provide a safe environment for residents and tourists.

According to Jeonnam Province on May 6, at around 6:56 a.m. on May 5, carbon monoxide entered a guest room at a resort in Wando, resulting in 14 guests being transported to the hospital. Fortunately, due to prompt rescue measures, all affected individuals recovered and were discharged after treatment later that afternoon.

Taking this incident as an opportunity, Jeonnam Province will conduct intensive safety inspections in various sectors, including gas, electricity, and fire safety, at 421 tourist accommodation facilities, approximately 2,200 general lodging facilities, and about 1,500 facilities subject to intensive safety checks such as children's facilities, multi-use facilities, and retail establishments.

This inspection will be a joint effort involving Jeonnam Province, local city and county governments, the Fire Headquarters, the Korea Gas Safety Corporation, construction companies, and related organizations from both the public and private sectors.

The main focus areas of the inspection include: ▲ the safety status of gas and electric appliances in guest rooms ▲ emergency evacuation routes ▲ proper functioning of fire safety equipment ▲ detection of gas leaks and the operation of alarms and emergency shut-off devices.

In particular, for the 19 tourist accommodation facilities with more than 100 rooms, Jeonnam Province, local governments, the Fire Headquarters, and the Korea Gas Safety Corporation will jointly conduct safety inspections by the end of this month. For the 402 smaller facilities, the municipal and county governments will carry out their own safety inspections.

Kang Younggu, Director of Resident Safety for Jeonnam Province, stated, "We deeply regret the carbon monoxide leak incident that occurred at the resort during the Family Month holiday," and added, "We will immediately conduct thorough safety inspections of accommodation facilities in the province to ensure the safety of residents and tourists." He continued, "We will also carefully monitor and manage the health status of all 69 guests, including the 14 who were hospitalized and discharged following this incident."

Meanwhile, Jeonnam Province plans to take immediate corrective action for minor issues that can be resolved on-site based on the inspection results. For serious defects, emergency safety measures such as suspension of use or demolition will be implemented. In cases where rapid repairs or reinforcements are necessary, administrative orders will be issued to prevent safety accidents at accommodation facilities.
