Lee Jaemyung Maintains Strong Lead After Supreme Court Decision
A recent poll showed that Lee Jaemyung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, continues to maintain his strong lead in public opinion, even after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn his conviction in the public official election law violation case and remand the case for retrial.
According to a survey commissioned by JoongAng Ilbo and conducted by Gallup Korea on May 3-4 among 1,006 adults aged 18 and older nationwide, Lee Jaemyung received 47% support in a hypothetical four-way race against Kim Moonsu of the People Power Party (13%), Lee Joonseok of the Reform New Party (4%), and Han Ducksoo, an independent preliminary candidate (23%), placing him in first place.
Lee Jaemyung also maintained his lead in a hypothetical three-way race, assuming a unified candidacy between Kim Moonsu and Han Ducksoo, which is currently being pursued by the People Power Party.
If Kim Moonsu were to become the unified candidate, Lee Jaemyung would receive 49%, Kim Moonsu 33%, and Lee Joonseok 9%. If Han Ducksoo were to become the unified candidate, Lee Jaemyung would receive 49%, Han Ducksoo 36%, and Lee Joonseok 6%.
In a hypothetical head-to-head race, with Lee Joonseok also joining the so-called "anti-Lee Jaemyung big tent," the results were: Lee Jaemyung 52% vs. Kim Moonsu 39%, Lee Jaemyung 51% vs. Han Ducksoo 41%, and Lee Jaemyung 51% vs. Lee Joonseok 29%.
When it comes to preference for unification between Han Ducksoo and Kim Moonsu, Han Ducksoo led with 39%, ahead of Kim Moonsu's 30% by a margin outside the margin of error. Among People Power Party supporters, Han Ducksoo had 65% support, while Kim Moonsu had 27%, showing a wide gap. Among Democratic Party supporters, Han Ducksoo had 17% and Kim Moonsu 37%.
This poll was conducted through mobile phone (virtual number) interviews. The response rate was 14.9%, and the margin of error was ±3.1 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. For more details, refer to the National Election Survey Deliberation Commission or the Gallup Korea website.
