Selected for "Carbon-Free Fuel-Based NCC Technology" in Petrochemicals
Project Budget of 41 Billion KRW... To Continue Until 2028
On May 5, Jeollanam-do announced that it has secured 41 billion KRW after being selected for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's project to develop "NCC Process Technology Based on Carbon-Free Fuels for Petrochemicals."
This project aims to develop eco-friendly process technology that converts the current heat supply fuels?such as LNG and methane?used in naphtha cracking center (NCC) processes into carbon-free fuels like hydrogen and ammonia, and to demonstrate this technology through pilot facilities.
The total project budget is 41 billion KRW (29.3 billion KRW from the national government and 11.7 billion KRW from private investment). The project will be carried out over four years, centered on the Yeosu National Industrial Complex, until 2028.
The naphtha cracking process is a representative petrochemical process in which naphtha extracted from crude oil is heated to high temperatures (over 800°C) to extract ethylene, propylene, and other products. However, methane and other substances that emit carbon dioxide are used as heat sources, accounting for more than 60% of total greenhouse gas emissions in the petrochemical industry. Therefore, converting the heat supply fuel to carbon-free alternatives is essential to achieve carbon neutrality.
This project aims to address the existing problems of the naphtha cracking process by: ▲ developing hydrogen and ammonia combustors for eco-friendly conversion of the naphtha cracking process; ▲ demonstrating the naphtha pyrolysis process and designing a commercial-scale naphtha cracking pilot process; ▲ analyzing the stability, environmental, and economic aspects of the naphtha cracking process and developing a carbon-free fuel supply system.
It is expected that this project will enable carbon neutrality in the naphtha cracking process using purely domestic technology, while simultaneously securing the sustainability and competitiveness of the global petrochemical industry.
An official from Jeollanam-do emphasized, "This project will be a significant turning point that goes beyond simple technology demonstration, laying the foundation for sustainable growth in the petrochemical industry."
