On May 4, the city of Gwangju announced that it will implement the "Permanent Infertility Predicted Oocyte and Sperm Cryopreservation Support Project," which provides assistance for the preservation of reproductive cells for citizens who are expected to become permanently infertile due to medical treatments.

In accordance with the Maternal and Child Health Act, which was revised earlier this year, the city will subsidize the costs of freezing and preserving reproductive cells for individuals who need to preserve their fertility for medical reasons, such as undergoing cancer treatment.

The support is available to citizens of any age who have been medically diagnosed as likely to become permanently infertile and therefore require fertility preservation. The city will cover 50% of the out-of-pocket procedure costs once in a lifetime, with a maximum of 2 million won for women and 300,000 won for men. After completing the procedure, applicants must submit the required documents?including the application form, diagnosis, and procedure confirmation?to the public health center in charge of their registered address.

Bae Kang-sook, head of the Health and Hygiene Division, stated, "Through this project, we can reduce the burden on citizens facing reproductive health crises and guarantee future opportunities for pregnancy. We will continue to work toward creating an environment that is supportive of pregnancy and childbirth."
