"Only a Public Apology Can Justify Stopping Lee Jaemyung"
"Yoon's Departure from the Party Is Needed to Relieve Kim Moonsu's Political Burden"
On May 4, People Power Party lawmaker Ahn Cheolsoo called on Kim Moonsu, the party's presidential candidate, to issue a public apology regarding martial law and impeachment, and urged former President Yoon Sukyeol to leave the party.
Through his social media account that day, Ahn stated, "Candidate Kim has taken on the historic mission of stopping Lee Jaemyung," adding, "To achieve this, we must change ourselves first."
Ahn addressed Kim directly, saying, "Former President Yoon Sukyeol's martial law left an indelible and deep wound on the people. As a responsible politician who has served as a Cabinet minister, you must apologize to the public," emphasizing, "That is the first justification for stopping Lee Jaemyung."
He went on to demand that Kim pledge to pursue constitutional reform to shorten the presidential term. Ahn said, "Please shorten the term to three years and promote both the local elections and a national referendum on constitutional amendment next year." He further stated, "Delaying constitutional reform any longer is a crime before history," and urged Kim to pledge constitutional amendments for a four-year, two-term presidency with distributed powers and to prevent legislative overreach.
Regarding former President Yoon, Ahn said, "For the sake of the Republic of Korea, which stands at a critical crossroads, it is time for a grand decision," and called on him to make the decision to leave the party.
Ahn also said, "Lee Jaemyung's goal is to frame this election as a contest between Yoon Sukyeol and Lee Jaemyung," and requested, "Please create a justification to relieve Candidate Kim of political burdens and to defeat Lee Jaemyung, who is a criminal suspect."
He added, "Mr. President's departure from the party will serve as a bridgehead to prevent Lee Jaemyung from coming to power and to restore liberal democracy in the Republic of Korea."
