On May 2 (local time), President Trump uploaded an image of himself styled as the Pope, the head of the Catholic Church, to his Truth Social account.

On April 21, following the passing of Pope Francis, President Trump responded to a question about his preference for the next pope by saying, "I want to be the pope. That's my number one choice."

President Trump also stated that he does not have a preferred cardinal, but added, "There is a very fine cardinal in a place called New York."

The conclave to elect the next pope will begin on May 7.
