5 Injured Among 449 Passengers
Accident Caused by Large Swells Despite No Weather Advisory
An accident occurred when a passenger ferry traveling from Dokdo to Ulleungdo was hit by strong swells, causing the glass to break and injuring five passengers.
At around 6:30 p.m. on May 2, a 364-ton passenger ferry departing from Dokdo and heading to Ulleungdo was struck by swells approximately 57 kilometers southeast of Ulleung County, North Gyeongsang Province, resulting in some of the vessel's glass being shattered.
As a result of the accident, five passengers sustained minor injuries. Among them, three people suffered abrasions and other minor wounds and received treatment at the Ulleung County Health Medical Center.
At the time of the accident, a total of 449 people, including passengers and crew members, were on board the ferry. Although no weather advisories had been issued, it was reported that large swells were present at sea.
The Korea Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the accident by questioning the ferry operator and passengers, and is also analyzing the sea conditions at the time of the incident in the affected waters.
