Lee Jaemyung's Campaign Reports Series of Tip-Offs on Planned Attacks
During Sokcho Visit, Lee Says, "Even If I Can't Shake Hands, I Can Still Meet Your Eyes"
It has been reported that a tip-off regarding a planned attack on Lee Jaemyung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, has been received. As Lee is currently visiting various regions to listen to public opinion, he also expressed caution by saying, "I ask for your understanding as I am unable to shake hands due to security concerns."
On the 3rd, Lee's campaign announced through his Facebook post, "We have been receiving a series of tip-offs about planned attacks against the candidate," and added, "Accordingly, from now on, it will be difficult for the candidate to have direct contact with people."
Since the 1st, Lee has been conducting a neighborhood listening tour to gauge public sentiment in various regions. On this day, he was carrying out the East Coast Belt Listening Tour, visiting markets and restaurants in Sokcho, Yangyang, Gangneung, Donghae, Samcheok, and Taebaek. With security being heightened due to the threat of an attack, it appears inevitable that contact with local residents will decrease starting today.
At Sokcho Central Market, where the event began at 11:00 a.m. that day, Lee mentioned the strengthened security and asked citizens, "I have been told that something might happen again today, so I need to be careful. Would you understand?" He then emphasized, "Even if I can't shake your hand, I can still meet your eyes."
Unlike the previous day, when Lee responded to requests for photos and handshakes from local residents while on the move, his contact with the public was noticeably limited. Security personnel blocked residents who tried to shake hands with Lee, asking them to "please just look with your eyes." Instead of physical contact, Lee responded to residents by giving a thumbs-up or making eye contact.
