At approximately 2:32 a.m. on May 3, a gas leak incident involving fire suppression gas occurred underground at Yangjae Citizens' Forest Station on the Shinbundang Line in Seocho-gu, Seoul.
According to fire authorities, four workers were inspecting fire safety facilities on the second basement level of the station when carbon dioxide, which is stored for fire suppression purposes, leaked. As a result, two of the workers were transported to a nearby hospital.
Because carbon dioxide is colorless and odorless, it is difficult to detect even if a large amount leaks in an enclosed space. This significantly increases the risk of suffocation accidents, so extra caution is required during such work.
Currently, trains on the Shinbundang Line are operating as usual. The police and fire authorities are investigating the exact cause of the incident.
