Consumer prices in the eurozone (the 20 countries using the euro) rose by 2.2% in April compared to a year earlier, according to preliminary estimates.
According to Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU, on May 2 (local time), consumer price inflation in the eurozone was slightly higher than the market forecast of 2.1%, and maintained the same rate of increase as in March.
The core inflation rate rebounded from 2.4% in March to 2.7% in April. Core inflation, which reflects the underlying trend of prices, is one of the key indicators considered by the European Central Bank (ECB) when making decisions on interest rate policy.
By sector, the increase in service prices was 3.9%, up by 0.4 percentage points from 3.5% in the previous month. The inflation rate for food, alcohol, and tobacco was 3.0%, up by 0.1 percentage points from the previous month.
Energy prices fell by 3.5% compared to a year earlier.
