According to the financial sector on May 2, Hana Bank disclosed three financial incidents that occurred due to external fraud. In all three cases, the incidents were found to have occurred when the perpetrators, including the borrowers, submitted falsified documents during the loan application process.
The first incident occurred between August 30, 2018 and May 21, 2020, with the estimated amount involved at approximately 3,098,263,000 KRW. The second incident amounted to 2,079,000,000 KRW and took place from August 19, 2022 to October 20, 2022. Hana Bank plans to recover the losses from this case through the sale of collateral. The third incident occurred between January 5, 2021 and January 27, 2023. The amount involved was 1,197,149,000 KRW, and after deducting the expected recovery amount from the total, the estimated loss stands at approximately 769,974,000 KRW.
A Hana Bank representative stated, "We discovered the incidents through our own investigation and by requesting verification from investigative authorities," adding, "Currently, we are taking recovery measures through the sale of collateral, and investigations by authorities are ongoing. Depending on the results of these investigations, we plan to pursue criminal charges against the external parties involved."
Hana Bank is currently working to prevent recurrence by strengthening its verification procedures and refining its document authenticity regulations, as part of an overall improvement of its operational processes.
This marks the fifth time this year that Hana Bank has disclosed a financial incident. On April 14, the bank reported a financial incident involving external fraud amounting to 35 billion KRW, and on April 23, another incident involving an improper loan of approximately 7.4 billion KRW was disclosed.
