Integration and Streamlining of Multicultural and Foreign Resident Ordinances

The Gwangju Seo-gu Council has initiated an amendment to its ordinance to integrate and streamline policies for foreign residents and multicultural families.

On May 2, the Seo-gu Council announced that the "Ordinance for the Full Amendment of the Gwangju Seo-gu Multicultural Family Support Ordinance," proposed by Assemblyman Baek Jonghan, passed the standing committee review during the 330th extraordinary session.

This ordinance aims to establish a comprehensive support system by integrating the "Gwangju Seo-gu Ordinance on Support for Foreigners" and the "Ordinance on Support for Multicultural Families." The ordinance sets out the basic framework for operations, including the status of foreign residents and multicultural families, the establishment of support plans, the scope and targets of support, research and surveys, and the delegation of duties.

Assemblyman Baek stated, "The number of foreigners in Seo-gu has increased by 16.3% compared to the previous year," and emphasized the need for an effective policy foundation to address population decline and enhance regional vitality as the reason for the amendment.

Previously, in a five-minute free speech in March, Assemblyman Baek proposed policy directions related to the influx of foreigners. In the same month, he also introduced the "Gwangju Seo-gu Basic Population Policy Ordinance." The ordinance amendment is scheduled for a final vote at the upcoming second plenary session.
