Statement on May 2 Criticizes Supreme Court Decision as “Irrational”

On May 2, the Jeonnam Provincial Chapter of the Democratic Party strongly condemned the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the acquittal verdict in the second trial of Democratic Party presidential candidate Lee Jae Myung's violation of the Public Official Election Act, and to remand the case to the Seoul High Court with a guilty ruling. The chapter denounced the move as "political interference."
In a statement released that day, the Jeonnam Provincial Chapter of the Democratic Party stated, "This Supreme Court decision is an irrational and unfair political ruling, and amounts to a judicial coup by the Supreme Court," adding, "It is blatant political interference in the presidential election."
The chapter continued, "This is a political trial targeting the leading opposition party's presidential candidate, who enjoys overwhelming public support, in an attempt to tarnish his reputation." They also criticized, "The Supreme Court made a hasty decision in just nine days after the case, which consisted of 70,000 pages and was reviewed by the lower courts for two years and two months, was referred to the full bench."
They further emphasized, "This ruling, carried out in collusion by Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee Dae, who was appointed by the main culprit of the rebellion Yoon Suk Yeol, and nine Supreme Court justices, constitutes judicial manipulation that threatens the constitutional order," and added, "It is a deviation by the judicial authorities, who have themselves denied the neutrality of the judiciary."
The chapter also stated, "With only 32 days left until the presidential election, unelected judges are ruling over the people and infringing on the sovereign people's right to choose," adding, "This is not the time for the judiciary, but for the people. In the face of clear truth, neither history nor the judgment of the people can ever be avoided."
