Daejeon Waterworks Headquarters Begins Full Operation of AI-Based Automatic Coagulant Injection System Daejeon City Waterworks Headquarters has established an AI-based coagulant automatic injection system at Wolpyeong Water Purification Plant. / Waterworks Headquarters

The Daejeon City Waterworks Headquarters announced that it has established an artificial intelligence (AI)-based coagulant automatic injection system at the Wolpyeong Water Purification Plant, which will be fully operational starting in May 2025.

This system is an advanced facility that monitors key water quality indicators in real time, such as turbidity, pH, and water temperature of raw water, and automatically determines and controls the optimal amount of coagulant to inject through AI analysis.

The AI-based automatic injection system quickly responds to changes in weather and fluctuations in incoming water quality, thereby enhancing water quality stability and standardizing the water purification process.

In particular, the system is expected to help supply even cleaner tap water to citizens by reducing the average amount of coagulant injected by about 5% and minimizing sludge generation.

The city is also utilizing AI-based water quality prediction systems in the Daecheongho watershed to provide predictive information on major pollutants such as algae (green tides), odor-causing substances, and manganese for operational purposes.

Park Dohyun, head of the Daejeon City Waterworks Headquarters, stated, "The introduction of the AI-based automatic injection system marks an important turning point in the smartification of the water purification process and in improving the perceived quality of tap water for citizens," adding, "We will continue to actively utilize advanced technologies to ensure the supply of safe and reliable tap water for all citizens."
