The Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education announced on May 1 that the Incheon Education Museum construction project has passed the final preliminary evaluation for public museums by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Accordingly, the plan is to invest a total of 13 billion won to remodel the existing Southern Education Support Office building and establish an education museum with one basement floor and four above-ground floors. The opening is scheduled for December 2029.
The city office of education failed the first preliminary evaluation in the second half of last year, but revised the project plan to reflect the panel's feedback and made another attempt this year.
Initially, the plan was to create an exhibition hall on the Southern Education Support Office site and place storage and educational facilities in the Jemulpo High School annex building, operating under a "two-hall system." However, for user convenience, the plan was adjusted to a "single-hall system" using only the exhibition hall building.
In addition, the focus will shift from simple exhibitions to planning exhibition themes as part of a mid- to long-term strategy and providing differentiated programs to visitors through research and academic studies.
The city office of education plans to proceed with related procedures such as fiscal investment review, design competition, and exhibition content development. With the construction of the education museum, the current Southern Education Support Office will be relocated in 2028 to the former Hyoyeol Elementary School site in Dohwa-dong, Michuhol-gu.
Superintendent Do Seonghun stated, "The construction of the education museum will serve as an important stepping stone to remember the shining history of Incheon education and move toward future education," adding, "We will create an open educational and cultural space that shares this valuable legacy with citizens and passes it on to future generations."
