Two additional individuals connected to the developer and the supervisory firm have been arrested in relation to the fire at a new resort construction site in Busan that resulted in six deaths.
On May 1, Seo Geunchan, the presiding judge in charge of warrants at the Dongbu Branch of the Busan District Court, announced that arrest warrants had been issued for Mr. A, the head of operations at Lufentis, the developer of the Banyan Tree Haeundae Resort, and Mr. B, an employee of the company responsible for fire safety supervision. Judge Seo conducted a pretrial detention hearing for the suspects earlier that morning and determined that there was a risk of evidence destruction and flight for both individuals.
The two are facing charges of instigating violations of the Building Act and the Fire-Fighting System Installation Business Act. The police plan to announce detailed investigation findings related to permit corruption to the media on May 8.
Previously, prosecutors and police had indicted six people, including Park Jungo, chairman of Samjeong Enterprise, the contractor, on charges of occupational negligence resulting in death and injury, and violations of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, in connection with the fire that killed six workers.
On February 14, 2025, at approximately 10:51 a.m., a fire broke out at the construction site of "Banyan Tree Haeundae Busan," located near Orangdae Park in the Osiria Tourism Complex, Gijang-gun, Busan. Six workers died and four others suffered minor injuries such as smoke inhalation.
