20 Years in Prison and 20 Years of Electronic Monitoring
"Meticulously Planned and Premeditated Murder" Receives Harsh Punishment
A teenage male who stood trial for killing a peer in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province last year has been sentenced to the maximum penalty allowed under the Juvenile Act.
On May 1, Yonhap News reported that the Criminal Division 1 of the Jinju Branch of the Changwon District Court, presided over by Chief Judge Kim Kidong, sentenced the teenage defendant, referred to as A, to 20 years in prison and ordered him to wear an electronic location-tracking device for 20 years on charges of murder. Under current law, juvenile offenders under the age of 18 who commit certain serious violent crimes can be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison. At the time of the crime, A was 17 years old. Previously, prosecutors had also sought 20 years in prison, 20 years of electronic monitoring, and 5 years of probation for A.
The court stated, "The defendant's crime was a meticulously planned, premeditated murder, which is different from impulsive anger or spontaneous violence, and thus carries a heavy degree of responsibility." The court further explained, "The method of the crime was also brutal, as the defendant repeatedly stabbed the victim in vital areas directly related to life." The ruling continued, "It is impossible to fully grasp the grief, pain, anger, and wounds that the victim's parents, who lost their only child, must bear as a result of the defendant's actions," adding, "Taking all these circumstances into account, the court imposes the highest penalty allowed under the Juvenile Act."
Previously, on December 25 of last year at around 8:50 p.m. on Christmas Day, A was accused of fatally stabbing another teenager, referred to as B, at the entrance of an apartment complex in Sacheon. It was confirmed that A had lured B, whom he had met through online chatting, by telling her he had something to give her, and then committed the crime. During police questioning, A stated, "It seemed like she had a boyfriend, and I didn't like that she was forming a new relationship with someone other than me," adding, "I intended to kill B."
After the trial, the Sacheon-Jinju Countermeasures Committee for the Sacheon Teenage Female Murder Case held a press conference in front of the Jinju Branch of the Changwon District Court, stating, "We welcome the court's decision to impose a fair and strict sentence on the defendant," and adding, "It is significant in that it serves as a warning that such tragedies must never be repeated."
