Jeollanam-do Province and Yeosu City will participate in the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' "Complex Marine Leisure Tourism City Contest Project" to become South Korea's leading hub for marine leisure tourism.
The Complex Marine Leisure Tourism City Contest Project is a large-scale initiative aimed at attracting more than 800 billion won in private investment and concentrating marine leisure tourism functions to foster a marine tourism city with national competitiveness.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries plans to select two locations nationwide through evaluations scheduled for June and July.
Jeollanam-do plans to submit a project proposal worth a total of 1.089 trillion won for an area of approximately 1.22 million square meters around Musulmok Beach in Pyeongsari, Dolsan-eup, Yeosu. The project cost will be shared as follows: 898 billion won in private investment, 100 billion won from the national government, and 100 billion won from local governments.
The public sector, funded by national and local government budgets, will consist of advanced marine leisure tourism infrastructure such as a complex marine leisure town, a marine tourism exhibition and experience center, and a marine tourism floating marina.
Additionally, a smart marine technology experience center will be established, offering experiences such as an indoor marine sports zone, marine robots, autonomous vessels, and deep-sea exploration content. This facility is expected to provide year-round marine leisure opportunities unaffected by weather conditions.
There will also be content focused on education and environmental preservation, including a digital exhibition hall for marine heritage and an underwater ecology center that recreates the coastal ecosystem of Yeosu.
The floating marina, which will become a landmark of Yeosu's marine tourism, will feature a yacht marina capable of accommodating more than 50 vessels, a floating hotel, a water leisure center, and outdoor gardens.
As part of the private investment, the Musulmok Tourism Complex Development Project will also be pursued. This includes a public golf course, upscale accommodations such as hotels and condominiums, tourism and leisure cultural facilities, and year-round commercial facilities. The approval process for the tourism district is currently underway in Jeollanam-do.
Since September 2023, Yeosu City has been working on establishing the "2030 Complex Marine Leisure Tourism City Basic Plan" to analyze the conditions for marine leisure tourism, improve infrastructure, and develop feasible strategies for this contest.
Park Youngchae, Director of the Oceans and Fisheries Bureau of Jeollanam-do, said, "We will present a new model for marine tourism by concentrating marine leisure tourism infrastructure and introducing advanced marine technology content."
