Sinkhole Measuring 2m Wide Appears at Gildong Intersection in Gangdong-gu, Seoul... Restoration Expected by Early Tomorrow On the 30th, ground subsidence occurred at Gildong Intersection in Seongnae-dong, Gangdong-gu, and restoration work is underway. Captured from Seoul Transportation Information Center (TOPIS)

According to Gangdong-gu officials and others on April 30, a sinkhole measuring 2 meters in width and 1.5 meters in depth appeared on the road toward Dunchon Station at Gildong Intersection at around 3:30 p.m. There have been no reported injuries. Authorities, including Gangdong-gu, are currently blocking two lanes and carrying out restoration work.

An official from Gangdong-gu stated, "A small-scale ground subsidence occurred due to leakage caused by a damaged drainage valve," and added, "Restoration work is scheduled to continue until early tomorrow morning." According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, this ground subsidence was found to have been caused by a leak at the welded joint of a 100mm pipe connected to a 2,000mm water supply main.

The city has dispatched a GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) survey vehicle to the site, and has been surveying the surrounding roads since around 5:00 p.m. The results of the GPR survey for the area will be published on the Seoul Safety Nuri website as soon as the analysis is complete.
