Changwon Special City in South Gyeongsang Province has been conducting extensive inspections and maintenance of rainwater inlets throughout the city since April to prevent flooding caused by heavy rainfall during the rainy season and extreme summer downpours.

This maintenance initiative is being carried out through a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors, with sequential inspections and maintenance of approximately 150,000 rainwater inlets across all towns and districts. In particular, voluntary participation by citizens and local organizations in cleaning the rainwater inlets has enhanced the effectiveness of the maintenance efforts.

The city has designated a total of 249 locations?including 69 areas with a history of frequent flooding and 180 areas at risk of flooding?as intensive management zones. Monitoring personnel, composed of local residents and Changwon city officials, have been assigned to these areas to implement a rainwater inlet management responsibility system.

In addition, starting in April and continuing throughout the rainy season, the city is promoting a monthly citizen-participation event called "Rainwater Inlet Cleaning Day," during which leaves, trash, and sediment are removed from key sections.

Furthermore, the city plans to complete maintenance of major sections before the rainy season begins and will continue ongoing monitoring and maintain a rapid response system after maintenance is completed to minimize flood damage.

Lee Jongdeok, head of the Sewerage Department, stated, "This year, we expect sudden and localized downpours to occur more frequently than in previous years, so we are taking even more thorough measures in maintaining rainwater inlets." He added, "We ask citizens to pay attention to the rainwater inlets in their neighborhoods and to report any abnormalities to the Administrative Welfare Center or through the National Sinmungo portal."
