"The establishment of a national medical school in Jeonnam in 2027 is a desperate outcry for the survival of two million residents."

On April 30, Jeonnam Provincial Assembly member Jeon Gyeongseon (Democratic Party of Korea, Mokpo 5) strongly urged for the establishment of a national medical school in Jeonnam in 2027 during a five-minute free speech at the 1st plenary session of the 390th extraordinary session.

Jeon Gyeongseon pointed out the dire state of local healthcare, stating, "Emergency patients are unable to receive timely treatment, children have to travel far from home for medical care, and even the elderly are not properly guaranteed their right to health. In some tragic cases, people have lost their lives on the road or in the middle of the sea while trying to reach a medical facility."

He continued, "Every year, more than 700,000 residents are forced to wander from hospital to hospital in unfamiliar places, sighing deeply. Now, we must break the chains of despair ourselves."

Addressing the government, he emphasized, "The establishment of a national medical school in Jeonnam must be set as the top priority in the discussions of the Medical Workforce Supply and Demand Estimation Committee for the 2027 academic year. This is not simply a regional demand, but a desperate outcry for the survival of our residents."

Jeon made it clear that "in order to prevent the recurrence of such tragic situations, a national medical school in Jeonnam must be established in 2027. This is a promise that must be fulfilled regardless of any changes in administration or political circumstances."

He also stressed, "In pursuit of the historic goal of establishing a national medical school, we must move forward with unprecedented cooperation and unity. Ensuring that everyone can enjoy high-quality medical services without discrimination, the first step toward a new Jeonnam is the establishment of a national medical school in Jeonnam."
