On April 30, the city of Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, announced that it had signed a contract with the Yuchang ENC Consortium, the contractor for the expansion and renovation of Cheonan Station on the Gyeongbu Line, on April 25, officially commencing construction.

This project is a large-scale urban regeneration initiative aimed at transforming Cheonan Station, which has remained in a temporary state since the failure of a privately funded station project in 2003.

The total project cost is 112.1 billion won, and the plan is to build an integrated station with a total floor area of 14,263 square meters by May 2028.

Specifically, the project will renovate the existing 4,440 square meters and expand by an additional 9,823 square meters, with plans to improve passenger facilities, station management, support services, transfer facilities, citizen amenities, and the maintenance of the East Plaza.

The station's design is themed as the "Gateway to Cheonan," combining a modern style with elements that reflect the region's traditional architecture.

Previously, the National Railroad Authority, the project management institution, selected the Yuchang ENC Consortium as the contractor on March 24 and has since been proceeding with the contract process.

The consortium consists of Yuchang ENC (55%) as the lead company, with Dongsung Construction (25%) and Myungga Engineering (20%) as partners. The construction supervision will be handled by Geunjung Architects & Engineers.

The city plans to provide regular updates and publicity on the construction progress in line with the project schedule, and will also promote improvements to the surrounding area and the local transportation system in conjunction with the station project.

Kim Seokpil, acting mayor of Cheonan, stated, "The expansion and renovation of Cheonan Station is not merely an improvement of transportation infrastructure, but a key project for revitalizing the old city center and boosting the local economy." He added, "With the extension of the GTX-C line to Cheonan, accessibility to the Seoul metropolitan area will be greatly enhanced, and Cheonan Station will be reborn as a regional hub for transportation, culture, and commerce."
