Mandatory Education for Taxi and Bus Drivers on Informing Passengers to Wear Seat Belts

The Ulsan Metropolitan Police Agency will conduct intensive crackdowns on failure to wear seat belts in all seats from May 1 until the end of the year.

According to the Ulsan Metropolitan Police Agency on April 30, 36 people died and 3,748 were injured in traffic accidents in the Ulsan area last year. Among them, 7 of the fatalities (19.4%) and 1,030 of the injured (27.5%) were not wearing seat belts.

According to a survey by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, the risk of serious injury increases by more than 80% if seat belts are not worn. In response, the Ulsan Metropolitan Police Agency will strengthen enforcement to encourage the habitual wearing of seat belts in all seats.

In addition, taxi and bus drivers will be provided with mandatory education on informing passengers to wear seat belts. If a violation for not wearing a seat belt is detected, a fine of 30,000 won will be imposed on the driver.

If a child under the age of 13 does not wear a seat belt, or if a child under the age of 6 is seated in a car seat but not wearing a seat belt, a fine of 60,000 won will be imposed. A police official stated, "Wearing a seat belt may seem like a small action, but it is the most certain way to protect your life," and urged the public to actively participate.
