Uijeongbu City Accelerates Creation of AI Innovation Cluster
Signs MOU with Kyungmin University, Shinhan University, Daejin University, and the Industrial Sector
Uijeongbu City in Gyeonggi Province has joined forces with local universities and the industrial sector to establish an artificial intelligence (AI) industry ecosystem.
On April 30, Uijeongbu City (Mayor Kim Donggeun) announced that it had signed a joint memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the creation of an AI Innovation Cluster with Kyungmin University, Shinhan University, Daejin University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, and the Yonghyeon Industrial Complex Business Association.
The purpose of this agreement is to proactively build a foundation for the AI industry in line with the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, foster AI startups, and promote the transformation of the industrial structure. The goal is to create a practical ecosystem centered on industry-academic cooperation.
Under the agreement, the parties will collaborate to establish a cooperative system for the creation of the AI Innovation Cluster, identify joint industry-academic research projects, and pool their efforts for administrative, policy support, and infrastructure development. In particular, Uijeongbu City plans to connect the research capabilities of universities with the needs of businesses to implement effective projects, and to expand the AI-based industrial ecosystem through ongoing administrative support.
Additionally, the participating organizations plan to cooperate on supporting startups, revitalizing research and development (R&D), and nurturing AI talent tailored to corporate needs. They also aim to enhance productivity and added value by introducing AI technology to manufacturing sites in the industrial complex through smart innovation.
Alongside these efforts, Uijeongbu City will establish a 10 billion won "Future Industry Development Fund" to actively support local innovative companies and startups. The city also plans to participate in public projects led by Gyeonggi Province, with the aim of developing Uijeongbu into a core hub for the AI industry.
Mayor Kim Donggeun stated, "The creation of the AI Innovation Cluster is a significant turning point for Uijeongbu City to become a leading AI hub. We will build a virtuous cycle in which universities, businesses, and the local community grow together, thereby further enhancing the region's capacity for innovation."
