The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on April 30 that Minister Lee Yousang visited the headquarters of SK Telecom (SKT) to inspect the site of the recent USIM information hacking incident and review the current response measures.
During the visit, Minister Lee pointed out the public's concerns and called on SKT to clearly disclose detailed information about the damage and the efforts being made to prevent further harm, in a way that is easy for the public to understand.
In addition, Minister Lee reviewed whether SKT's ongoing countermeasures are appropriate and urged the company to mobilize all available resources to resolve the situation. In particular, he requested that SKT increase the number of support staff and booths for USIM replacement at airport roaming centers, and actively assist digitally vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, in subscribing to USIM protection services.
Finally, he called on SKT to actively cooperate with the joint public-private investigation team working to determine the cause of the incident, and to thoroughly inspect the entire telecommunications network to identify and reinforce any vulnerabilities so that such incidents do not recur.
Minister Lee emphasized, "This incident is directly linked to the public's trust in our telecommunications infrastructure and is a matter of utmost seriousness. We must recognize the gravity of the situation and implement double and triple layers of preventive measures that meet the public's expectations."
He added, "The government is already responding to this issue through an inter-ministerial approach to resolve it as quickly as possible. I ask that you continue to actively discuss and communicate with the relevant ministries, especially on urgent matters that require immediate action."
