Unveiling Ceremony to Be Held at the East Gate of Ulsan Grand Park on April 30
Around 2,000 Representatives from Labor, Management, and Related Organizations to Attend
On April 30, at 3:30 p.m., the city of Ulsan will hold the unveiling ceremony for the Ulsan Industrial Accident Victims Memorial Tower at the East Gate of Ulsan Grand Park to honor and remember workers who tragically lost their lives in industrial workplaces.
Approximately 2,000 people from labor, management, and related organizations will attend the unveiling ceremony, including Ulsan Mayor Kim Dukyum, Ulsan City Council Chairman Lee Seongryong, Ulsan Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Lee Yooncheol, Ulsan Federation of Korean Trade Unions Chairman Kim Chunggon, and Ulsan Regional Headquarters of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions Senior Vice-Chairman Cho Changmin.
The event will proceed solemnly, featuring a choir performance in memory of the victims, a report on the progress of the memorial tower's construction, the unveiling ceremony, and a moment of silence.
The decision to install the Ulsan Industrial Accident Victims Memorial Tower was made in 2023 as the first agenda item reviewed and approved by the Ulsan Labor-Management-Government-Civic Council.
This represents Ulsan's promise to remember and never forget the pain and sacrifices of countless industrial accident victims and their bereaved families, as the city established itself as the "industrial capital" following its designation as a special industrial zone in 1962.
In particular, the current design was selected and produced through a design contest held for Ulsan citizens last year, making the memorial especially meaningful as a result of collaboration among workers, employers, citizens, and the local government.
Additionally, the ceremony is even more special because it is being held during the first-ever Industrial Accident Workers' Day (April 28) and the Industrial Accident Workers' Memorial Week (one week from Industrial Accident Workers' Day), which were established this year following amendments to the Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance Act.
Mayor Kim Dukyum stated, "This memorial tower is not just a symbolic structure, but a pledge by the citizens of Ulsan to remember the precious lives of the victims and the pain of their families." He added, "Just as citizens from all walks of life participated together in the creation of this memorial, let us also unite our efforts to overcome the current economic challenges facing Ulsan, such as the high exchange rate and the Trump tariff policy."
This unveiling ceremony is the first case in which a metropolitan local government has directly created and unveiled a memorial tower through a labor-management-government-civic agreement, and it has been organized as a separate event in connection with the Korean Federation of Trade Unions' "Labor Day Commemoration Event."
