Special Exhibition at Maruk Station for the 45th Anniversary of 5.18
Featuring Original Works on Global Democracy
The National Human Rights Commission Gwangju Human Rights Office announced on April 29 that it will hold a special exhibition themed "Democracy and Human Rights" to mark the 45th anniversary of the 5·18 Gwangju Democratization Movement.
The exhibition will take place throughout May at the Human Rights Theme Station located at Kimdaejung Convention Center Station (Maruk Station) on Gwangju Subway Line 1. The works on display include original illustrations from the book "Democracy in the World That Teenagers Must Know" and related materials produced based on the book.
Since its opening as a Human Rights Theme Station in 2008 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Kimdaejung Convention Center Station has served as a space for raising human rights awareness among citizens and youth.
The Gwangju Human Rights Office aims to use this exhibition to introduce the process by which citizens in countries with fragile democracies defend their dignity and rights. Artist Hong Jiheun, who curated the exhibition, vividly captured democratic movements that took place in various regions around the world. The office stated, "We hope this will be an opportunity to reaffirm the value of democracy on the 45th anniversary of 5·18."
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission, reflecting diverse opinions and expert survey results regarding the operation of the Human Rights Theme Station, has ended the operation of the Human Rights Experience Center as of the end of 2024. The Gwangju Office expressed gratitude to Gwangju Metropolitan City and Gwangju Transportation Corporation for their cooperation over the years, and announced plans to begin restoration work on the Human Rights Theme Station to its original state after the exhibition concludes.
The exhibition is open to everyone free of charge, and coloring postcards of the artworks will be provided to institutions that apply in advance.
