Mayor Lee Minguen: "We Will Create a Core Hub for Exchange Between Multicultural Students and the Local Community"
The establishment of the tentatively named 'Ansan Multicultural Sharing School,' which Ansan City in Gyeonggi Province is promoting to support the academic adaptation of students from multicultural families who enter Korea mid-way through their education, has entered full swing.

On April 29, Ansan City announced that the project to build the 'Ansan Multicultural Sharing School,' which is being jointly promoted with the Gyeonggi-do Ansan Office of Education, has conditionally passed the joint investment review by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Ministry of Education.
The Ansan Multicultural Sharing School is part of a 'school complex facility project' that utilizes idle school land to install and operate facilities needed by both the school and the local community. The advantage of this project is that the Office of Education and the school can secure educational facilities, while the local government can expand necessary community facilities, thereby reducing financial burdens.
The city plans to build the Multicultural Sharing School on the former site of Ansan Wongok Elementary School, with three underground floors and two above-ground floors, and a total floor area of 10,295.7 square meters. Alongside educational facilities that support the academic adaptation of mid-arrival students before they enter regular schools, the city also plans to provide an underground parking lot with around 200 spaces to alleviate parking shortages in the Wongok-dong area.
In this review, the committee stipulated as a condition that the project proceed only after reporting detailed operational programs based on an analysis of user demand related to the 'Neulbom' initiative.
With the project passing the review, the city plans to accelerate administrative procedures, including establishing a shared property management plan and initiating architectural design services, aiming for completion in 2030.
Meanwhile, Wongok Elementary School, where the Multicultural Sharing School will be built, was selected in September 2020 for the Gyeonggi Future School Space Innovation Project and has established a growth platform for students aspiring to a global future. Through this project, the school has been equipped with a multilingual simultaneous interpretation and translation platform, artificial intelligence (AI) robots, a smart farm, and virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies for immersive learning.
Lee Minguen, Mayor of Ansan, stated, "Once the Multicultural Sharing School is established, it will play a complementary role to Wongok Elementary School's space innovation project," adding, "We will ensure that the Multicultural Sharing School becomes a core space for realizing 'interculturalism,' where not only multicultural students but also local residents can interact beyond just an educational facility."
