Naju City Hall's Shin Somang Qualifies for Asian Athletics Championships

Naju City in South Jeolla Province announced on the 29th that Shin Somang, a member of the Naju City Hall track and field team, won first place in the 800m event at the "2025 Gumi Asian Athletics Championships Final Selection Competition" held at Gumi Citizens Stadium in North Gyeongsang Province.

With this victory, Shin earned a spot to compete in the Asian Athletics Championships, which will be held in Gumi in May.

This competition, held in Gumi from April 21 to 23, was significant as only the first-place finisher in each event was granted the right to compete in the Asian Athletics Championships.

First held in 1973, the "Asian Athletics Championships" is organized by the Asian Athletics Association and serves as a festival for Asia’s top track and field athletes.

Currently serving as a national team member, Shin Somang is drawing attention as many are eager to see whether she can surpass her status as Korea’s top 800m runner and become the best in Asia.

Yoon Byungtae, Mayor of Naju, stated, "I am proud of Shin Somang for elevating the reputation of Naju with her victory in this competition," and added, "I look forward to her outstanding performance at the 2025 Gumi Asian Athletics Championships to be held in Gumi in May."

Meanwhile, Shin Somang will participate in the 800m and 1,500m events at the "29th KTFL National Business Track and Field Championships," which will be held at Naju Sports Park from April 30 to May 2. As this competition takes place on her home ground, expectations are high that she may claim two titles.
