The election jumper worn by Lee Jae Myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate, is drawing attention. The jumper features a red triangle beneath the party’s number 1 symbol, which is interpreted as an intention to embrace all supporters by using both colors representing progressives and conservatives.

On April 28, Lee attended the Supreme Council meeting held in the party leader’s office at the National Assembly as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate. It had been 19 days since he resigned from the party leader position to run in the primary.

When Lee entered the party leader’s office, Park Chan Dae, the acting party leader and floor leader, put a blue party jumper on him that read “Democratic Party 1 Now is Lee Jae Myung.” The corner of the number 1 was colored red, which is the color symbolizing the People Power Party.

The Democratic Party has consistently used blue tones in the past, but starting with this presidential election, they have also incorporated red during the primary process to broaden their base. A Democratic Party campaign official explained, “The purpose is to convey a message of embracing all supporters by using colors that symbolize both progressives and conservatives at the same time.”

Lee Jae Myung also expressed his determination at the Supreme Council meeting. He said, “It feels unfamiliar to visit the party leader’s office after such a long time. A new beginning has started for the Republic of Korea,” and added, “When I looked up the word ‘president’ in the dictionary, I found that it means a leader who greatly unifies the people.”

He continued, “Whether it’s a club treasurer or an alumni president, the greatest duty of a ‘representative’ is to ensure the community remains united and continues to exist,” and added, “Once elected as alumni president, regardless of which village someone is from or whether a member supported you or not, there should be no discrimination.”

Finally, he emphasized national unity. Lee stated, “It is important to help people live peacefully and happily, but what is even more important is ensuring that the community itself does not break apart,” and added, “Even if there is competition with others, once the representative player is selected, the president’s role is to lead the people down a single path, overcoming small differences.”
