U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that the war in Ukraine must end immediately, the U.S. State Department announced on April 28 (local time).
According to a press release from the State Department, Secretary Rubio made these remarks during a phone call held at the request of Minister Lavrov the previous day.
During the call, Secretary Rubio emphasized the next steps in peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine and the need to end the war now. The State Department stated, "The United States is making serious efforts to end this senseless war."
Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump, while suggesting the possibility of so-called secondary sanctions, pressured Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt attacks on Ukraine and sign an agreement to end the war.
On this day, President Putin unilaterally declared a three-day ceasefire in Ukraine from June 8 to 10 (local time) next month.
