AI Technology to Be Used in Judicial Proceedings... National Court Administration Launches Artificial Intelligence Committee

The National Court Administration of the Supreme Court will establish and operate a committee to discuss ways to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) technology in judicial proceedings.

On April 28, the National Court Administration announced the launch of the "Judiciary Artificial Intelligence Committee," which will serve as an advisory body to Chief Justice Cheon Dae-yeop. The committee will be chaired by Supreme Court Justice Lee Sukyeon, who is recognized as an expert in information technology and AI within the judiciary. Justice Lee is also a joint professor at the School of Computing at KAIST and the president of the Artificial Intelligence Research Society under the court.


The National Court Administration explained, "The committee will set the direction for the introduction of AI in the judiciary, review the ongoing judiciary AI development projects and roadmap, and serve as a verification body within these development projects."


The committee members include Kwon Changhwan, Chief Judge at the Busan Bankruptcy Court (Vice President of the Korean Association for Artificial Intelligence and Law), Kim Myungjoo, Director of the AI Safety Research Institute, Bae Kyunghoon, Director of the LG AI Research Institute, Yoon Seongro, Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Seoul National University, Lee Eunju, Director of the Center for AI Reliability at Seoul National University, Choi Kyungjin, Professor at the Department of Law at Gachon University, and Choi Jaesik, Professor at the Graduate School of AI at KAIST.


Going forward, the committee will spearhead the introduction of AI in the judiciary. It will deliberate on the direction and priorities for adopting the technology and review potential revisions to relevant laws and Supreme Court regulations. The committee will also discuss ways to protect judicial data and prevent legal risks that may arise in the process of introducing AI technology.


The National Court Administration stated, "With the goal of building an AI-based judicial information system, we plan to strengthen cooperation with external organizations to support efficient and fair trials." On April 30 at 2 p.m., the National Court Administration will hold a briefing session on the "Development and Construction of a Trial Support AI Platform" for private companies, academia, and other stakeholders in the main auditorium of the Supreme Court.
