At the design competition jury held on April 24 in the Yeonoseo Room at Pohang City Hall, seven judges participated and selected the entry jointly submitted by Gidan Architects and Chang General Architects as the final winner among 16 entries.

The winning design received high marks for the building's form and the connectivity between its interior and exterior spaces.

The East Sea Coastal Defense History and Culture Center is a project supported by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs and is the first of its kind in the nation.

The center will be built in Ilwol-dong, Nam-gu, on a site covering 9,620 square meters, with a total floor area of 1,998 square meters across three above-ground floors. The total project cost is 18.1 billion won, and the center is scheduled to open in 2027.

The center is expected to become a comprehensive cultural space that simultaneously serves commemorative, exhibition, experiential, and educational functions through a variety of exhibitions, programs, and hands-on activities that showcase the coastal defense history of the East Sea region.

Pohang City plans to accelerate the construction of the center, beginning with the selection of the winning design in this competition.

Once completed, the center is expected to serve as a major tourism hub for the region by linking with nearby attractions such as Yeonorangsaeonyeo Theme Park, Pohang City Museum, and the Naval Aviation History Center.

Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "We will do our utmost to ensure the successful completion of the East Sea Coastal Defense History and Culture Center so that it becomes a landmark for the region," and added, "We will work to ensure that the center widely promotes the history and culture of the East Sea region and provides meaningful experiences for both local residents and visitors."
